ELENA BEREZHNAYA, PhD

Associate Scientist

Elena received her BS and MS in physics from Southern Federal University in Russia where she also performed her PhD research in cellular biophysics/neurobiology in Anatoly Uzdensky’s lab. Her thesis focused on the mechanisms of cell death triggered by photo-induced oxidative stress in neurons and glial cells with an emphasis on mitochondrial metabolism. She continued her training as a postdoctoral fellow in Gyorgy Hajnoczky’s lab at Thomas Jefferson University working to define the function and regulation of the mitochondrial uniporter complex with a focus on the role of MICU2 in the brain. Her current research interest is mitochondrial calcium signaling in neurodegeneration.
